Yesterday had two major hip-hop video releases. 50 Cent’s new video, directed by DanTheMan and Broadway, and Drake’s debut, helmed by Kanye West. Let’s take a look, shall we?
50’s gets kudos for being the first video in the history of hip-hop to prominently feature a Volvo station wagon in the first shot. Drake’s for persistent innovation in the lowering of necklines on the ladies’ costumes. I guess there’s not a lot I can add to the conversation, but whatever you want to say about the relative merits of each of these (I don’t personally find either one to be super-compelling), it’s nice to see artists really trying to make videos that are different. They’re not incredible, but not every experiment can be a smashing success.
