8:06 am….that’s the time the bell rang to start the school day when I was in high school.  Back then, all I could think about was what my life would be like once I left the halls of good old Columbia…college, grad school, marriage, 2.5 kids, or so I thought.  I never thought, not even once, that I would return to a high school to teach, let alone develop the passion I have for the students.  The days between then and now have taken me around the world in more than eight days, but the world perspective has not only shown me how fortunate I am but also almost forced me to want to do more for all the brown and black children that the system seems to be designed to make fail.  Nowadays, I do find myself in that high school classroom, teaching business in East Orange while working towards my Ed.D all in efforts to bring the real about urban education to the masses, so we can re-claim the brown and black children of the world and offer them the same fighting chance that so many of us benefit from.
