Who knew when I started up in this place in the Fall of 1995 what the outcome would be. The journey is FAR from over, but it’s cool to know that perhaps some current students can look to my PREMIUM poster on the 9th Floor of NYU’s Undergraduate Department and find a ‘lil inspiration. This particular section is for the first features of alumni. Next to mine is HALF NELSON, then out of sight are MARIA FULL OF GRACE and RAISING VICTOR VARGAS.

I’ve been fortunate enough to complete a second feature, which while immediately next to the men’s room …

… is just a few feet away from the office of a certain master filmmaker and one of his most important films…

Darius Clark Monroe is a co-worker and fellow filmmaker from the NYU community. The editor on the film is Keith Davis, whose blog I just dropped by and noticed this post regarding Spike Lee, Page 6, and the film trailer you can watch above. Congrats, fellas.

  • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 14TH @ 9PM EST

Hosted by Pete Chatmon and Anthony Artis

Our special guest on the next Double Down Film Show will be notable film producer, MONTY ROSS. Monty began his filmmaking career as an acting student at Clark Atlanta University where he had the remarkable experience of being classmates with the likes of Spike Lee, Jasmine Guy, Bill Nunn, and Samuel L. Jackson amongst others.

During a filmmaking career that spans from the 80’s to present day, Monty was one of Spike Lee’s first producing collaborators who produced She’s Gotta Have It, School Daze, Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn, Malcolm X and more.

    • How can what you don’t know work to your advantage?
    • What do talented producers look for when choosing directors?
    • How can you develop your own “do or die” attitude and methodology?
    • How can you choose the right project and director to work with?
    • What are the red flags of a potentially bad filmmaking partnership?

Monty Ross will give you his straight-forward advice and candid anecdotes on all of the above in this extended interview on the realities of pushing film projects all the way through from concept to completion with limited resources. Close the gap between filmmaking theory and filmmaking reality every Wednesday night. The back door to film school is now open.

Oh yes. We are on to some new next level stuff over here at Double 7 Film. After Benjamin Ahr Harrison set it off with Music Video and Violence Weeks, we’re keeping with the trend and bringing you themed blogging from all of our contributors every other week.

    Behold … SNEAKER WEEK!

A lot of our Double 7 Worlders are Sneaker Enthusiasts, and we are embarking upon an innovative campaign for a NYC Sneaker Boutique, so it only makes sense for us to bring you in deeper…or remind you about the culture that has changed footwear forever.

    Enjoy…discuss…do what you must. Word.

    Peep game.

First, Mr. Lee fires off at Mr. Eastwood about the lack of (read: nonexistant) portrayals of African-American military service in his 2 WWII era films, Flags of our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima. “Dirty Harry” responds by saying Spike should “shut his face”. Read the Guardian’s Coverage HERE for round one.

Then, Spike retorts in true Brooklyn fashion with “we’re not on a plantation, Clint” as covered in the Guardian’s article HERE.
